Junior High School Counselor

Guthrie Public Schools

Position Purpose

The Junior High School Counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program that supports the academic, social/emotional, and career development of students. The counselor works collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to ensure that students are supported in their personal growth and educational planning.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field
- Valid Oklahoma School Counselor Certification
- Knowledge of adolescent development and counseling techniques

- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Reports To: Building Principal

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Student Support and Counseling
-Provide individual and group counseling to assist students with academic, social, and emotional concerns.
- Help students develop coping, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Identify students experiencing difficulties and coordinate appropriate interventions.
- Assist students in developing positive interpersonal relationships.

Academic Guidance

- Support students in academic planning and goal setting.
- Assist with course selection and scheduling.
- Monitor student progress and collaborate with teachers and administrators to support student success.

Provide guidance to students transitioning from elementary to junior high and junior high to high school.

Career and Future Planning
- Provide career awareness and exploration opportunities for students.
- Assist students in identifying interests, strengths, and future goals.
- Coordinate career-related programs and activities when appropriate.

Collaboration and Communication

- Work with teachers, administrators, and support staff to address student needs.
- Communicate with parents regarding student progress and concerns.
- Participate in student intervention teams and other support committees.
- Coordinate referrals to outside agencies when necessary.

Program Management

Implement and maintain a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with district and state guidelines.
- Maintain appropriate records and documentation related to counseling services.
- Assist with testing coordination and interpretation as assigned.
- Participate in professional development to remain current with counseling practices.

Additional Duties
- Support district initiatives related to student wellness and success.
- Assist with crisis intervention and response when needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or district administration.

Work Environment

- School environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, and parents.
- May require attendance at meetings, trainings, and school events.

Terms of Employment

- Salary and work year to be established by the Guthrie Public Schools Board of Education according to the district salary schedule.
