Job Summary:

The Middle and High School Jazz Band Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the jazz band program, including teaching instrumental techniques, directing rehearsals, organizing performances, and fostering a passion for jazz music among students. This role involves collaborating with other music educators, coordinating with school administration, and participating in professional development activities to enhance the jazz band program.

Responsibilities:

1. Teaching Instrumental Techniques:

Instruct students on proper playing techniques for their respective instruments, including brass, woodwind, percussion, and rhythm section instruments (e.g., piano, bass, guitar).
Provide individualized instruction to students to help them develop their musical skills and proficiency on their instruments.

2. Conducting Rehearsals:

Lead rehearsals for the middle and high school jazz bands, focusing on ensemble playing, dynamics, timing, and interpretation of jazz repertoire.
Arrange and adapt music to suit the instrumentation and skill level of the jazz bands.

3. Repertoire Selection and Development:

Select appropriate jazz repertoire for performance, taking into account the interests and abilities of students.
Introduce students to a variety of jazz styles, including swing, bebop, blues, Latin jazz, and contemporary jazz, through the selection of diverse musical pieces.

4. Performance Coordination:

Organize and oversee jazz band performances at school concerts, community events, festivals, and competitions.
Collaborate with school administrators to schedule performances and secure venues for jazz band events.

5. Student Support and Mentorship:

Provide guidance and support to students, helping them develop confidence, discipline, and teamwork skills through participation in the jazz band program.
Offer individual coaching and mentoring to students who show particular talent or dedication to jazz music.

6. Recruitment and Retention:

Recruit new students to join the jazz band program through outreach efforts, auditions, and promotional activities.
Implement strategies to retain students in the jazz band program, fostering a positive and engaging musical environment.

7. Professional Development:

Stay current with trends and best practices in jazz education by attending workshops, conferences, and professional development seminars.
Continuously seek opportunities to enhance teaching skills, musical knowledge, and pedagogical techniques related to jazz music.

8. Administrative Duties:

Manage administrative tasks related to the jazz band program, including budgeting, inventory management, equipment maintenance, and communication with parents and stakeholders.
Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and repertoire selections.

Required Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field
Ability to manage and drive critical learning for groups of 25-35 students
Proficiency in playing and teaching a variety of jazz instruments
Strong knowledge of jazz theory, repertoire, and improvisation techniques
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve musical excellence
Organizational skills and attention to detail in managing jazz band activities and events
Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment
Preferred Qualifications Prior experience teaching and directing jazz bands at the middle and/or high school level.
