JOB TITLE: ELEMENTARY LIBRARY/MEDIA SPECIALIST
QUALIFICATIONS: As set by state certification authorities
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
JOB GOAL: To work with teachers and administrators to provide each student with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual probing and growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Creates an environment conducive to learning and personal development.
Evaluates, selects, requisitions, and processes new library material for assigned schools.
Reads books, magazines, professional journals, and review services for information
on the selection of materials and equipment.
Involves faculty in selection and evaluation of materials and equipment.
Selects materials for preview on advice of classroom teachers.
Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials and services.
Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials,
and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
Catalogs and maintains an inventory of all materials, print and non-print.
Maintains inventory records and repair records of equipment.
Arranges for inter-library loan of materials.
Available at any time for consultation with teacher to plan media center/classroom
learning activities.
Works with teachers to establish procedures for group or individual assignments.
Participates in curriculum development and review.
Provides supplementary resources through local production of materials.
Keeps vertical file material up-to-date.
Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop
skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
Counsels with and gives reading guidance to individual students based on their
reading level and interests.
Arranges frequently-changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest
the library's patrons.
Develops the media budget, and is prepared to justify and defend budget requests.
Provides overall supervision of circulation, reference area and all media
center activities.
Develops policies and procedures for optimum function of the school library
media center.
Assists in selecting the media center staff.
Delegates duties, responsibilities to media center staff.
Trains staff members.
Prepares work schedules for staff.
Plans and contributes to the in-service education program for teachers and staff.
Serves as a liaison with the administration, other school and district personnel,
the community, professional organizations and creators, producers and distributors
of educational media and equipment.
Works with and submits reports to administration.
Plans and implements evaluative tools to determine effectiveness of the school
library media program, with participation of the teaching staff.
Performs such other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as the principal
may assign from time to time.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month year

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions
of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
