POSITION: Secondary Assistant Principal

EXEMPT STATUS: Exempt

NUMBER OF DAYS: 217

PAY GRADE: Admin/Prof PG-5

DIVISION:

DEPARTMENT: Assigned campus and level

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: Supervise and evaluate the performance of personnel as assigned

EDUCATION:

Master’s degree from accredited college or university
Valid Mid-Management or Principal certification
Certified in the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS)
Pass Bilingual or ESL exam through the Texas Education Agency preferred

EXPERIENCE:

Three years’ experience as a classroom teacher
Three years’ experience in instructional leadership roles
Position Function/Purpose

To provide leadership in the operation of the school by assisting the principal.

Major Responsibilities and duties:

Instructional Management

1. Evaluate instruction within classrooms, assess the effectiveness of the instructional program, and

initiate improvements as appropriate.

2. Assist in evaluating instructional materials and recommend the most appropriate items available for the

purpose of facilitating effective instruction.

3. Promote the active involvement of teachers in curriculum development and implementation.

4. Assist in providing curriculum coordination and balance.

5. Assist in interpreting grading policies for students.

School/Organization Climate

6. Assist in maintaining a school atmosphere which promotes effective learning.

7. Assist teachers, where necessary, in becoming sensitive to the needs, interests, and feelings of students.

8. Assist in the coordination of an effective guidance program.

9. Understand thoroughly the services of pupil, counseling, and nursing personnel and assists in directing pupils,

teachers, and parents to the appropriate services.

10. Assist in the campus PEIMS coordination.

School/Organization Improvement

11. Assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.

12. Participate in planning and revising the school handbook and other school publications.

13. Assist in the development of the master schedule for the school.

14. Assist in the maintenance of required forms and student records.

15. Participate with the principal in developing and implementing school policies.

Personnel Management

16. Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences with staff;

serve as a second appraiser in the Professional Development and Appraisal System.

17. Assist principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new instructional staff.

18. Assist in selecting, assigning, training, supervising, and evaluating the performance of support

professional staff.

19. Assist in obtaining and orienting substitute teachers.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

20. Assist with inventories and with the ordering and distribution supplies.

21. Assist in the administration and organization of business affairs, especially the development of

school budgets.

22. Assist in coordinating the use, maintenance, security, and repair of the school building, equipment,

and grounds.

23. Assist in the organization and coordination of transportation which services the school.

24. Assist in the administration and supervision of the cafeteria.

25. Assist in grouping and assigning pupils to classes.

26. Share responsibility for the direction of school calendar, activities program, and assemblies.

Student Management

27. Assist in student disciplinary matters.

28. Assist principal and faculty to ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student

discipline is appropriate and equitable.

School/Community Relations

29. Promote the understanding and implementation of the Midland Independent School District's

philosophy, goals, and objectives.

30. Assist in the articulation and coordination of the educational program.

31. Assist in planning, evaluating, and leading faculty, departmental, grade-group, and/or parent meetings.

32. Initiate and maintain appropriate communication with parents.

33. Assist in coordinating activities of the various school advisory committees and the PTA.

Professional Growth and Development

34. Formulate, with the principal, an annual Assistant Principal Professional Development Plan.

35. Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards

and the Texas Education Agency code of ethics.

36. Use information and insights provided through assessment instruments, the district appraisal process,

evaluative feedback from line supervisors, and professional development programs to improve performance.

37. Provide leadership in addressing challenges facing the profession; pursue professional

development activities; disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.

38. Perform such other duties as may be assigned or as may be necessary for job effectiveness.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise and evaluate the performance of personnel as assigned.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness

Strong communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Ability to work well with a diverse population

Minimum Experience:

Three years of experience as a classroom teacher

Three years’ experience in instructional leadership roles

Terms of Contract: According to district approved calendar

Working conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors:

Emotional – Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions.

Physical – Moderate carrying and lifting. Standing, sitting, walking, use of fingers, eyes and ears

Occasional district-wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Environment – Inside normal office environment
