JOB TITLE: School Nurse

JOB SUMMARY: The person in this position practices professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. This person facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; provides case management services; and, actively collaborates with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning. This person also provides supervision and exercises appropriate delegation of duty.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Effectively implement nursing standards of practice and scope
Assessment: Collect comprehensive data pertinent to student/client health and/or situation.
Analyze assessment data to determine plan of care and/or intervention
Outcome Identification: Identify expected outcomes for plan individualized to the student/client or situation.
Implementation:
Coordination of Care: Coordinate care delivery
Health Teaching and Health Promotion: Employ strategies to promote health and a safe environment (e.g. health education, participation on District committees and task forces)
Consultation: The school nurse provides consultation to influence the identified plan,
enhance the abilities of others, and effect change.
Evaluation: Evaluate progress towards achievement of outcomes.
Ethics: Adhere to ethical practices.
Education: Demonstrate and maintain knowledge and competency that reflects current school nursing practice.
Evidence-Based Practice and Research: Integrate evidence and research findings into the nursing practice.
Quality of Practice: Contribute to quality nursing practice.
Communication: Communicate effectively in a variety of formats in all areas of nursing practice.
Leadership: Demonstrate leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.
Collaboration: Collaborate with the healthcare team, family, and others in the conduct of nursing practice.
Professional Practice Evaluation: Evaluate one’s own nursing practice in
relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and
regulations.
Resource Utilization: Utilize appropriate resources to plan and provide nursing services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible.
Environmental Health: Practice in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.
Program Management: Manage school health services.
Administer first aid to staff/students, medication, and specialized medical treatments for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured persons in accordance with State laws and District policies; provide basic wound management and basic life support, including the use of the AED; respond to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, seizures, allergic reactions, bleeding, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and follow-up action.
Participate as the health team specialist on the child education evaluation team to develop the health care component of the IEP and 504 for students with identified health needs
Perform skilled nursing procedures such as ventilator care, gastrostomy feedings, tracheotomy care, catheterization, diabetes care, etc.
Develop, implement, and monitor state and local mandated annual health screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing, etc) for the purpose of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care of ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children.
Provide health education and counseling to help prevent teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, tobacco use, alcohol, substance abuse, other health related issues, and wellness programs.
Maintain, evaluate, and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.
Plan and implement nursing care plans and emergency action plans and services for children with disabilities and/or health conditions that interfere with learning, including medication administration and monitoring.
Develop, implement, and monitor training for staff who provide health services, including delegated procedures, medication administration, diabetic care plans, bloodborne pathogens, CPR, etc.
Provide assessments and interventions for students with mental health concerns.
Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through immunization programs, early intervention, surveillance, reporting, and follow-up of contagious diseases.
Provide health education, health resources, wellness programs, and curriculum recommendations to the school staff.
Assist in the formation and implementation of health policies, goals, and objectives for the school district (e.g. medication administration; control of communicable diseases; child abuse and neglect; screening programs; care of illness and injury; special health care needs; disaster preparedness; general school health programs; compliance with laws, acts, regulations, and rules related to healthcare).
Develop and implement training and communication related to such topics.
Coordinate school/community health activities and serves as liaison between school, home, community, and health care providers.
Monitor students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, transportation, field trips) for the purpose of providing care as defined by student health plans and assessment of student needs.
Maintain current and accurate records pertaining to student medication and treatment administration, immunizations, screening results, and injury reports.
Ability to determine initial treatment and intervention based on SAMPLE (Symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last oral intake, and Events leading up to present injury/illness), SOAPIER (Subjective data; Objective data; Assessment; Plan; Intervention; Evaluation; Revision), or other recognized method in the field of nursing

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Operate a computer to enter data, maintain records and generate reports.
Regularly perform heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull. and move heavy objects or materials such as lifting over 50 pounds on a continuous basis; lifting over 50 lbs. maximum or carrying any object weighing over 25 lbs.
Will be required to regularly stand; walk; and sit for extended periods
May experience constant interruptions and changes to normal routines.
The ability to communicate with various groups of people to include: parents; teachers; transportation; administrators; other medical field personnel; and outside agencies.
Manage independently all materials, paperwork, and equipment required for completion of medical tasks; ability to lift and transport medical equipment; and ability to document and submit necessary medical information.
May be required to assist with physically transferring students from wheelchairs, mats, positioning tables, toilets, lifts or other positioning equipment.
Ability to respect student and staff confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, immunization records, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
Adapt to a flexible lunch schedule, based on student needs.
Travel between multiple sites in a safe and timely manner.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
186 Day Contract, 7 hours per day
Salary schedule based on certified teacher scale plus 5%

Required Qualifications EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
Hold current licensure from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as a Licensed Registered Nurse and hold a valid certificate as a School Nurse from the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
Bachelor’s Degree Required
3-5 years experience as an RN working with young children and adolescents preferred
Organizational skills, basic mathematical skills, basic computer skills, and communication skills are an essential part of this job.
Clean driving record and reliable transportation.
Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics of students in grades preschool through age 21, including students with special needs.
Extensive knowledge of procedures and processes to document medical information in regards to patient care and treatment.
Current CPR and first aid certification; must also obtain and maintain Instructor Certification
Comply with all applicable school district policies and procedures, health services practices, and the scope of practice outlined by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and the Oklahoma Nursing Practice Act.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects, including observations, written records, electronic records, and communication in compliance with local, state, and Federal guidelines (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.)
Ability to provide supervision to licensed and unlicensed staff members in accordance with the Oklahoma Nurse Practice Act. This may include LPN, AUA, CNA, etc.
Ability to critically watch and direct activities or courses of action
Ability to determine the amount of supervision necessary as it relates to experience, skills, abilities, and the healthcare needs of the students being served
Knowledge of Five Rights of Delegation (Right Task; Right Circumstances; Right Person; Right Direction/Communication; Right Supervision and Evaluation)
